T.I. vs. Gucci Mane; who is the originator of trap music?

Rappers Gucci Mane and T.I. are going back and forth debating who created trap music, but maybe no one person can hold the title.

There is a slew of allegations circulating right now about who claims the title of the true inventor of trap music. On the one hand, we have Gucci Mane, who is one of the hardest workers in the industry right now, and on the other, we have T.I., who has been slamming Gucci in recent interviews.

T.I. released an album back in 2003 titled Trap Muzik, which he shared a screenshot of the album earlier this week as a reminder, and captioned it, "Ok,so.... AGAIN for the slow ones in the back... August 19th,2003 Birth of Trap Muzik & Only fools dispute facts!!!"

"FOH wit that Christopher Columbus ass... Look what I discovered, even though they was already here ass shit!!!! WITCHO GOOD CAPPIN ASS," he added.

Then in retaliation, Gucci posted a little Flashback Friday, captioning his photo, "The Day I Invented Trap Music."

Lots of shots being fired here, folks. T.I. has been noted as evolving trap music, but he's also insistent that he was the inventor.

In an interview with HipHopDX, T.I. said, "A lot of people don't really, really know that I created trap music. There was no such thing as trap music prior to [T.I.]. No such thing. It didnt exist. It was Outkast and crunk, like thats what it was. Organized Noize and crunk."

A lot of people dont really, really know that I created trap music. There was no such thing as trap music prior to [T.I.]. No such thing. It didnt exist. It was Outkast and crunk, like thats what it was. Organized Noize and crunk.

To T.I.'s credit he definitely was one of the first to use the term "trap" but does that mean he invented the genre?

2 Chainz once told Life + Times that the term "trap" referenced a lifestyle more than music, saying, "It wasn't music. It was a lifestyle. It was an area; it was an environment where you stayed at."

Trap music, like most music, isn't created by one person but pushed forward by different artists and it evolves with the times and the culture.
