In Serena Williams' first competition since giving birth five months ago, she and her sister Venus lost 6-2, 6-3 to Lesley Kerkhove and Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands in a Fed Cup doubles match Sunday.

Luckily their loss didnt count toward the end result of the USAs first-round Fed Cup win against the Netherlands, but Serena isn't going to let the loss get her down.

Theres been a lot of ups and downs in the practice. I think thats normal for everything that Ive gone through. But it also gives me another view. Its almost relaxing for me because I have nothing to prove.

The tennis star, who hadn't played competitive tennis since winning the 2017 Australian Open while pregnant for her 23rd career Grand Slam singles title, revealed in a pre-weekend news conference that "theres been a lot of ups and downs in the practice."

"I think thats normal for everything that Ive gone through," she told the press. "But it also gives me another view. Its almost relaxing for me because I have nothing to prove. Again, just fighting against all odds to be out there, to be competing again."

Serena has been very open about complications surrounding her pregnancy with daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., who was front and center watching her mother's big court debut. The 36-year-old previously told Vogue magazine that she developed several small blood clots in her lungs after her daughter was born and that she was unable to get out of bed for the first six weeks after giving birth.
