The Jets signed safety J.J. Wilcox to a contract Wednesday morning, per NFL Network and ESPN.

After safety Rontez Miles recently undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus, the New York Jets went after Wilcox, who was reportedly signing with the San Francisco 49ers. He was in the Niners' office when he decided to back out and fly to New York.

Former Cowboys and Steelers S JJ Wilcox was in 49ers offices to sign today...and then he “flipped”, in word of one source, and decided he wanted to play for HC Todd Bowles. “He got stage fright,” said another source. Now Wilcox is on flight to NJ to sign with Jets

One source said Wilcox was overcome with "stage fright," and another claimed the 27-year-old expressed a desire to play for Jets coach Todd Bowles.

With second-year stud Jamal Adams solidified at the other safety position, Wilcox will compete for time with Marcus Maye, providing depth and ability in three-safety packages - as well adding special-teams value.
