Victoria Mahoney makes history as 'Star Wars' first black female director

Following criticism that every "Star Wars" director has been a white male, Lucasfilm just dropped a significant game changer.

Say hello to the new director of the next Star Wars: Victoria Mahoney.

The history-making move for Lucasfilm sees that of Mahoney being the first African American and first female director to work as any kind of director on a Star Wars movie.

Though Mahoney won't be the leading director, that role is for J.J. Abrams, who is the episode IX director and executive producer, but she will be his second unit director for the film.

This one's for the outliers, dreaming big--in small corners of the Earth. #MaytheForceBeWithYou

After the initial news broke, Mahoney took to Twitter to spread the news, writing, "Catt's outta the bag. Thank you @ava for putting my name in the #StarWars #LucasFilm hat. Thank you #JJAbrams for inviting me on your ferocious ride. *This one's for the outliers, dreaming big--in small corners of the Earth."
