All fighters know that quickly cutting weight comes with its own health complications, but it's a necessary staple before each bout. Sadly, the end doesn't always justify the means.

UFC star Paige VanZant is opening up about her own unhealthy weight cutting stories and why she feels a whole lot better fighter in a higher weight class than she did sucking weight to meet her 115-pound goal.

"I was having different issues with myself and my body," the 23-year-old fighter told BBC News. "I was giving myself an eating disorder to make the weight."

I was having different issues with myself and my body. I was giving myself an eating disorder to make the weight.

VanZant, who is currently out with a broken arm, sits around 135 lbs when she isn't competing, but she would diet down to 115 lbs to compete in the Strawweight division. It wasn't until this past January when she witnessed a scary moment with another fighter that made her reconsider her weight cutting tendencies.

"I was at a fight where a fellow UFC fighter, Uriah Hall, was cutting weight and he pushed himself just to the brink of death. He had kidney failure and started seizing in the hallway right in front of me," VanZant said. "It's because of that I'm like 'I can't do this anymore.' "

She has since decided to go up in divisions, saying, "I recently went up to the Flyweight division which is 10 lbs heavier, which is a huge difference."

VanZant has won seven of her 11 professional fights, and though she is nursing a broken arm, she'll be back.

"I don't think anybody loves getting hit in the face, but I guess I love punching people," she said. "For me, it's not even violence; it's one person's skill over another."
