Yoel Romero TKO's Luke Rockhold

Romero has likely earned a shot at the full title, but middleweight champion Robert Whittaker remains out with a staph infection.

Middleweight contender Yoel Romero viciously knocked out Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 in Australia, to gain a likely title shot against champion Robert Whittaker.

The two danced, gauging and measuring each other for most of the fight. In fact, the more technical Rockhold was probably winning the fight. Then, the mighty Romero landed a punishing left hand which put Rockhold down.

And followed up with another left that ended Rockhold's evening.

Respect to Yoel that man is made of steel.

Romero missed weight for the UFC 221 main event versus middleweight contender Luke Rockhold. Coming in at 187.7 pounds on Thursday, it meant that only Rockhold could win the interim strap that was on the line.

Now the quirky Romero will get another shot at Whittaker, who he lost to last summer. Whittaker subsequently became champion, when all-time great Georges St. Pierre decided to drop the title he won via a handpicked comeback fight with Michael Bisping.

When Romero and Whittaker will fight remains to be seen, as the champion is still recovering from a staph infection in his stomach.
