Canelo Alvarez vs. GGG rematch: full ticket refunds being offered in the wake of Alvarez' suspension

Alvarez has been temporarily suspended by Nevada State Athletic Commission less than two months from fight night. Billy Joe Saunders could be a potential replacement for a summer date.

Per ESPN's boxing writer Dan Rafael, MGM Resorts International is offering ticket buyers, for the rematch between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin, a full refund, in light of the quickly increasing likelihood that the fight will be canceled.

"If a fan requests a refund for the Canelo-GGG 2 fight they may receive one, in full, at the original point of purchase," an MGM Resorts International spokesman announced to ESPN in via email on Wednesday night.

The news comes after Alvarez was temporarily suspended by Nevada State Athletic Commission last week for two positive tests for performance-enhancing drugs, requiring the Mexican fighter to Alvarez to appear at a commission hearing on April 10.

Alvarez, who traveled last week to Las Vegas to meet with commission executive director Bob Bennett and commission chairman Anthony Marnell III for a 90-minute interview on the matter, claims the positive test results are due to his eating contaminated beef in Mexico, where that has been an ongoing problem for athletes. Farmers in Mexico often include clenbuterol, which is prohibited for farming use in the United States, in cattle feed because it helps reduce fat and increase lean muscle mass.

With the growing belief, and evidence, that the fight will be canceled, many are forecasting possible replacements for Golovkin.

The lead candidate appears to be English middleweight titlist Billy Joe Saunders, who's on the shelf with a hand injury. However, he would be ready by June. It would be an attractive fight with unique styles, which would offer a chance to unify the four major organizational belts to create an undisputed champion at middleweight. (Golovkin has three belts; Saunders has the fourth.)

GGG could always choose to tussle with Daniel Jacobs in a rematch fans could demand to see, after their close first rumble.
