Kevin Smith has made a lot of changes to his lifestyle following a massive heart attack and opened up about the incident on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

The 47-year-old comedian described the events, saying, "They got me to the hospital and they wheel me into the emergency room and the whole time Im chill. Like, the guy said, the paramedic, he goes, 'Youre being real calm, thats going to get you through this,' And theres a dude behind him goes, 'Thats whats going to save his life.'"

Smith's calmness was partially caused by the amount of weed he smoked before he started filming the stand-up special. The paramedics kept telling the 47-year-old how calm he was but he wasn't even aware that he was having a heart attack, he just thought he smoked too much.

They got me to the hospital and they wheel me into the emergency room and the whole time Im chill. Like, the guy said, the paramedic, he goes, Youre being real calm, thats going to get you through this.' And theres a dude behind him goes, Thats whats going to save his life. And Im like, What does that part [mean]?

The comedian went on to explain, "I said, 'Doc, honestly, I just smoked too much weed this morning. Thats what this is. I honestly thought I was too high. Id smoked a bunch of weed that day because I was doing the show and then I smoked a joint right before the show and then I got off stage and all of the sudden I had a heart attack."

The doctor told him the weed kept him calm during the heart attack.

"He said, 'You kept calm. They told you [that] you were having a massive heart attack, and you remained calm the whole time, so that joint saved your life,' " Smith recalled.

Remember the comedy special I was shooting with @comedydynamics the night I almost died of a heart attack? Well Im proud to announce @showtime picked it up and it airs MAY 11! Youll be able to watch the show while looking for signs that Im gonna be in an operating room one hour later! Heres the official press release: SHOWTIME PRESENTS KEVIN SMITH: SILENT, BUT DEADLY ON FRIDAY, MAY 11 AT 9 PM ET/PT Stand-Up Special From Veteran Comedian Taped On Night Of His Post-Show Heart Attack Photo credit: @allanamato LOS ANGELES April 9, 2018 On February 25, veteran comic Kevin Smith took the stage at the Alex Theater in Glendale, CA to perform the first of two planned stand-up shows. But right after the first show ended, he suffered a near-fatal heart attack. Smith cheated death, and so the special shot that fateful evening, KEVIN SMITH: SILENT, BUT DEADLY, will make its world premiere Friday, May 11 at 9 p.m. on SHOWTIME. In this hilarious set, Smith riffs on marriage, fatherhood, friends and his work (or lack thereof). Though unaware of Smiths condition then, both he and the audience would later learn that Smith had suffered a massive heart attack caused by a 100 percent blockage of the artery known as “the widow-maker.” Lucky and happy to be alive, the award-winning comedian/filmmaker/writer/actor/podcaster now brings this death-defying special to his multitude of fans. #KevinSmith #showtime #comedy
