Spurs Pau Gasol advocates for Becky Hammon: she 'can coach NBA basketball'

Familiar with coaching greatness, Gasol, a two-time NBA champion, has been coached by two of the very best in Gregg Popovich and Phil Jackson.

Using The Players Tribune, San Antonio Spurs center Pau Gasol issued an open letter to detractors and critics of assistant coach Becky Hammon's head coaching candidacy.

He specifically wanted to "knock down a few of the silly arguments and talking points against Coach Hammons candidacy and the larger idea of a female NBA head coach that Ive seen floating around."

I've played with some of the best players of this generation and I've played under two of the sharpest minds in the history of sports, in Phil Jackson and Gregg Popovich. And I'm telling you: Becky Hammon can coach. I'm not saying she can coach pretty well. I'm not saying she can coach enough to get by. I'm not saying she can coach almost at the level of the NBA's male coaches. I'm saying: Becky Hammon can coach NBA basketball. Period.

Not only did he run through examples of her coaching ability, specifically to instruct and command a team, he shot down the idea of the Spurs hiring her for publicity or "good p.r."

"Would you really expect Coach Pop to develop his staff any differently than he develops his players? Of course not," says Gasol. "Pops only standard for doing anything is whether itll help us in just one way and it isnt getting good p.r. Its getting Ws. And getting those Ws The Spurs Way."
